I have many passions and being drawn to sewing stands out as being an important one.
I recall watching my Dad machine sewing “beach towel cover ups” for the family and was thinking it odd, but inspiring, that the sewer was my father. I expect he came upon it honestly as his sister and mother were accomplished sewers and quilters. My mother, not being right handed like me, was able to teach me the basics of hand sewing and knitting when I was only seven. Certainly a challenging task for both of us. I was in awe of her as I cannot hold a pencil in my left hand!
My first sewing skill challenge was as a young “Brownie” troop member on a Canadian Air Force Base in France many years ago. Santa left me a small electric sewing machine that same year and I have been sewing ever since.
Over time I improved those first efforts with formal and self learning. Eventually, as a stay-at-home-mom, I started designing and supplying original product to the busy regional tourism markets as a juried member of the Prince Edward Island Crafts Council. I was primarily using regular printed cottons sourced locally. By chance I received a sample packet of premium batiks. The vivid prints and unique designs of those first fairly traded hand-dyed cottons inspired new original products. I began to purchase more batiks for my own production as well as the quilting community. The “unique country quilt shop” phase of this lifetime journey began! I have, and continue to, strongly support the Canadian textile industry and regularly purchase from their latest offerings of batiks as well as a few assorted basics.
Quality, design and function work together to produce the best finished result. My desire is to help you find the best fabrics that will give your projects the best results. Or, choose from the “Made by Nancy” section if you are looking for a quality hand crafted creation for yourself or a special gift.
My home and studio are in a chemical and smoke free environment. Bentley, a golden retriever mix, shares this space but he typically doesn’t visit me while I am working! My love of great music, good food and country living in Prince Edward Island go hand in hand in supporting my passion for sewing.
